Assinie, Ivory Coast – A unique moment in the history of African micronationalism will unfold in the heart of one of West Africa’s most beautiful seaside resorts. From white sand to luxury hotels, Assinie is preparing to host the first summit of French-speaking African micronations, organized by the Union of West African Micronations (UWAM).

This historic meeting will bring together several micronations considered to be the continent's pioneers in this field: the Republics of Toubak and NUN, the State of Nova Troy, the Principality of the Baobabs and the Kingdom of Kôrô. It is therefore a diplomatic cast affirmed on the Ivorian shores which is preparing for its very first summit.
A stronger structure
For Prince Max-Carmel, Sovereign of the Principality of the Baobabs, this event marks a turning point. Interviewed by microcosme.info about the future of the movement, he is optimistic:
« At the level of the Principality of Baobabs, we insisted on having this physical meeting and we proposed to the Republic of Toubak to organize it. I also see that the Republic of Toubak is doubling down all the stops. Their organization is impressive. Therefore, I expect a more solid structuring of the UWAN. We are also thinking, subsequently, of proposing to the European, Asian and American micronations the establishment of a "micronational UN". In short, I believe that it would initially be a strong rapprochement between African micronations, then an opening to the world with the prospect not of replacing the MicroFrancophonie but of giving birth to the idea of a larger international community of Micronations. »
A need for a large and ambitious supranational organization .
Among the UWAN members participating in its development, some are also members of the Microfrancophonie, which has been severely shaken this year. We wanted to know if we should see in UWAN the beginning of a distancing? The response of His Serene Highness is unequivocal:
« It must be said that the debacle of the MicroFrancophonie has shaken the African states that saw it as a space of legitimacy and harmony. There is therefore, within the Micronations of Africa, a need for a large and ambitious supranational organization. Inevitably. »

There is no doubt that the UWAN and its members are now looking further ahead with a unifying project that is open to the world. However, the idea of a Micronational UN has experienced numerous failures, and microcosme.info was therefore curious to know how Prince Max-Carmel and the other members planned to motivate micronations. Here is what he told us:
« It must be said that this is an idea that is being championed by the Principality of the Baobabs and to which we are trying to get other African micronations to adhere. Then, if it is supported, it will be extended to micronations elsewhere. There are three reasons for this. The first is that culturally in Africa, we believe that unity is strength and that by being together, we are more resilient. This idea is also undoubtedly linked to the fact that in their sometimes delicate and complex political context, African micronations are those that run the greatest risk of being misunderstood by political powers given the somewhat suspicious culture of politics on the continent.
Next, we believe we can learn from other failed attempts to create a multi-micronational organization, notably the MicroFrancophonie and the GUM. Finally, we have no doubt that working together will allow both the proliferation of ideas and projects, as well as international mutual assistance that will give micronations credibility in the eyes of traditional countries and international organizations.
To achieve this, we believe we need less restrictive texts and provisions. It is clear that it was legislature, this rigid culture of laws, texts, and regulations, that caused the MicroFrancophonie to collapse. We therefore need a more flexible organization with relatively little bureaucracy in its operation. Then we will move towards other micronations in Europe, America, and Asia, especially emphasizing a touch of humor. I think the organizations that have failed in the past have lost their sense of humor by taking their operations too seriously.
Afterwards, we are not certain of succeeding, but it is worth trying something without becoming obsessed with it. Finally, it is undoubtedly clear that belonging to a larger organization that brings together other micronations is protective in the African context. This is obvious. "
Assinie 2025 is therefore not just a summit, but a declaration of intent, that of seeing the emergence of a strong, organized, and open micronational Africa. The Micronations of West Africa are bearers of a remarkable optimism and universalism in which they believe. This is what gives them all the positive energy and this determination that is both serene and enthusiastic. A feeling that does good in a world that badly needs it.
